Work on Commonwealth Games stadium to start next spring

Work to redevelop Alexander Stadium ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is set to kick off in the second quarter of 2020.

Planning documents, which were submitted to Birmingham council, have revealed the main package of work on the £70m scheme is expected to wrap up by the end of 2021.

In October 2018, the council confirmed the stadium will be redesigned, which will host all the games’ athletics events, plus the opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium will increase its permanent seating capacity from 12,700 to 18,000 allowing more than 30,000 during the Games through additional temporary seating.

Other developments for the project include the £350m athletes’ village, and the new £50m Sandwell Aquatic Centre, which will host the swimming and diving events.

The public has until 7 November to comment on the planning application. It is anticipated a final decision will be take on the proposals by the city council’s planning committee early next year.
