Handwashing to prevent the spread of viruses
With COVID-19 there has been increased exposure to regular handwashing routines and sanitising. The NHS advice states you need to wash your hands thoroughly with soap for 20 seconds- the time it takes to sing happy birthday twice! Hand washing is not only about palm to palm washing but between fingers, backs of hands and under nails. Once washed thoroughly, it is important not to touch any contaminated surfaces, including taps. Construction industry washing facilities
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) “Sinks / washbasins need to allow workers to wash their hands, face and forearms properly.” To ensure this is possible it is advisable to check the sink size and tap position.
Not only do the hand washing facilities need to be adequate in size, they should provide warm or hot and cold running water, and be in a different location from eating and drinking facilities. This designated washing area is even more important on construction sites using hazardous substances, such as lead, cement or micro-organisms.
