Energy Efficient Site Lighting- Why move towards LEDS?

LED site lighting

As the evenings draw in, site lighting becomes key to keep the work going. When lighting walkways and corridors, festoon lights are an optimal solution, however if trying to light up large parts of a working site then floodlights are a good option.

Lights cost money, so how do you get the most energy efficient, cost efficient site lighting?

Benefits of LED Lighting

Over the last decade we have seen a move away from Halogen bulbs to LED bulbs. There are a number reasons LED lighting is growing in popularity.

  • LED lights are 75% more energy efficient than traditional lightbulbs
  • LED lights typically last up to 11,000 hours compared to 2,000 and 4,000 hours
  • LEDs produce a white light which increases visibility when doing detailed work
  • LED lights are more suitable on site because they are more robust
  • LED bulbs don’t get hot making them much safer to work around
  • While the initial outlay may be more than traditional lighting, the life time costs are lower

LED lighting is available in a wide variety of home and industrial products, and on the construction site you may find LED flood lights, LED festoon lights and even LED portable lights.

How to pick the right LED lighting for your construction site?

With a number of LED work lighting options out there, it’s important to pick the correct type of lighting for the situation.  According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - ‘Lighting at work is very important to the health and safety of everyone using the workplace. The quicker and easier it is to see a hazard, the more easily it is avoided. The types of hazard present at work therefore determine the lighting requirements for safe operation.’

The first requirement to consider is whether you need indoor or outdoor lighting.

Outside lights need to offer a level of weather resistance, therefore waterproof lighting is a consideration as well as lighting suitable to work in vast range of temperatures. LED lights are more durable and robust therefore more weather resistant. When considering the area that needs to be lit, large outdoor areas often benefit from LED flood lights, while smaller areas would benefit from floor standing lights or A-Frames.

Should you need to light a walk way or fence, Festoon Lighting is a great solution. Festoon lights are also known string lights or rope lights. Unlike domestic festoon lights, ranges aimed at the construction industry are designed to be robust and powerful.

Portable work lights, typically used to light smaller areas, provide lighting for more detailed projects. Plasterer’s lights, task lights and portable flood lights are a great way to ensure that light reaches all areas of your construction site, especially when working indoors over the winter.

Access to power is vital for lighting sources

Mains powered site lighting, such as LED festoon lights and floodlights, can be located around the building site using a selection of power cables and extension leads.  When a power source is needed outdoors, an electrical transformer box is an ideal power source designed with a weatherproof coating. These power sources come in a selection of 110v and 240v. Typically, 110v is used on building sites to reduce the risk of death or injury from electricity during construction.

When traditional lighting isn’t possible, battery or solar powered lighting provides an alternative. LED solar flood lights provide an energy efficient solution and also reduce the reliance on access mains power.
