Bryson Offers Durable Fire Hazard Warning Safety Signs

Construction sites are rife with different safety hazards, which is why there are numerous government building and safety standards and codes of practice in place. With regulations being updated and expanded to include new technology and situations, a careful and thorough understanding is required to ensure compliance. Sometimes the complexity creates more questions than solutions.

For example, when the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) was implemented in 2006, confusion arose from the ambiguities in the legislation. The legality of fire safety signs, in particular, became an issue because the RRO did not include the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. These regulations were put into force to comply with the EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC) which aimed to regulate all types of safety signage throughout the Euro Zone. Safety professionals, upon reviewing the RRO, concluded that safety signs that followed the RRO were valid and need not be replaced. However, with Brexit as the new reality, questions on safety standards are once again in the news.

Are Your Fire Safety Signs Still Legal?

The UK’s separation from the European Union is presenting several new challenges to various industries. While negotiations are still on-going at the moment, safety professionals and business owners are working to make sure worksites remain safe for workers and comply with the correct safety standards.
Currently, signs are still following the standards laid out in BS 5499 which covers all types of safety warnings. Fire hazard warning safety signs that adhere to these standards follow the same ‘visual message design’ laid out in the Regulations and the EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC). As government leaders continue negotiations with the EU, business owners are expected to follow the existing rules and regulations until they are changed.

Reminders in Choosing Compliant Fire Safety Signs

There are six major categories for safety signs. Each one is assigned a specific design format and colour for easier identification.

Prohibition Signs

These circular signs illustrate specific actions that are prohibited in the area. The act is depicted by an image which is then surrounded by a red circle with a crossbar across it.

Warning Signs

These triangular signs are in yellow with a black symbol or text over it. These signs serve to warn people of potential risks in the area.

Mandatory Signs

These are circular signs that illustrate actions and activities that instruct people on the necessary safety measures in the area. These have blue backgrounds with white text or symbols.

Safe Conditions Signs

These rectangular signs are green with white text or symbols. Safe condition signs indicate the exit routes for emergencies, such as fires or earthquakes.

Fire Equipment Signs

These signs are either rectangular or circular with red backgrounds and white text and symbols. These indicate where fire equipment is located, from fire hoses to fire extinguishers.

Supplementary Information Signs

These signs are rectangular and come in different colours (green, red and yellow). As the name suggests, they provide worksites with additional information that about other safety signs.

Signage during COVID-19

Implementing Social Distancing on site is key during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the government’s announcement on 10th May to ease lockdown measures and encourage construction workers back to site, many teams are experiencing the same challenge returning to site... The challenge of changing behaviours and mindset. Regular communication and constant reminders about social distancing, hygiene and stay safe practices on site have been highlighted as essential, therefore signage is vital! At Bryson we're doing everything we can to help protect your workforce on site. We have been guided by your requests and concerns about returning to site so we have developed a range of COVID Signage dedicated to helping you bounce back post the lockdown.
